A border blouse design is the easiest way to turn plain fabric into something special. You do not always need embroidery: a strip of zari, a soft lace or a neat row of piping can do the job.
This page has 18 ideas for lace and border work on the neck, back and sleeves. Each picture has a note for your tailor on width and placement.

Zari Border Blouse Design
Zari border is the most loved finish for silk and festive sarees. A latest zari border blouse design often uses the border in two widths, wide on the sleeve and thin on the neck.

Two widths of the same zari make the blouse look planned, not patched. Perfect for a Kanjivaram or Gadwal saree.
Tailor note: Sleeve border 3 inches wide, neck border 1 inch, both cut from the same zari roll.

The zari runs along the V and again on the waist hem, which frames the back neatly. Good for a plain silk saree that needs some shine.
Tailor note: V back 9 inches, 1.5 inch zari on neck and waist hem, hooks at back.

Silver zari on navy feels cool and modern. Wear it with a grey, silver or white saree for a quieter festive look.
Tailor note: Boat neck front and back, 1 inch silver zari on neck and sleeve hem.
Blouse Lace Design Back: Back Side Blouse Design with Lace
A blouse lace design back is easy to stitch and cheap to update. A lace blouse design hides uneven edges and makes even a plain cotton blouse look neat.

Soft crochet lace is cool in summer and pairs well with Bengal cotton or tant sarees. A sweet, simple choice for daily wear.
Tailor note: U back 8 inches, 1.5 inch cotton crochet lace, one cloth button and loop at nape.

Hanging lace with pearl drops moves as you walk, which looks lovely at sangeet. Pair with a plain or lightly embroidered saree.
Tailor note: Deep round back 9 inches, hanging pearl lace on edge, add padding.

This modern stylish ribbon blouse design uses a satin ribbon lace and a matching bow. Very cute for college farewells and day functions.
Tailor note: Square back 8 inches, satin ribbon lace on edges, small satin bow at the centre top.
Scallop Design Blouse Ideas
Scallops are small curved edges cut or embroidered along the neck, sleeve or hem. They suit organza, net and cotton silk best.

Embroidered scallops on a sweetheart neck look light and bridal. Lovely with a pastel organza or a white and gold saree.
Tailor note: Line with soft cotton, scallops about 1 inch, keep sweetheart front 6 inches deep.

A scallop hand design blouse like this keeps the body simple and puts all the detail on the baju. Great for a printed saree.
Tailor note: Elbow sleeves, scallop hem with cutwork dots, keep body plain with front hooks.

Scallops on both the back neck and waist hem give a soft frame. Wear it with a teal or gold tissue saree.
Tailor note: Round back 8 inches, 1 inch scallops on neck and waist, hooks in front.
Piping Blouse Design and Patch Work
Piping is a thin fabric tube stitched on the edges. A contrast piping blouse design is the cheapest way to make a plain blouse look tailored. Patch work adds bits of the saree border on the body.

Three rows of piping look like a woven border and suit handloom sarees with multicolour borders.
Tailor note: Three rows of 0.25 inch piping on neck and sleeves: red, gold and green.

Cut pieces of the saree border are stitched across the sleeves like bands. A blouse patch work design that uses up leftover fabric.
Tailor note: Elbow sleeves, two 2 inch saree border patches on each sleeve, 1 inch gap between.

Gold piping along the opening and small potli buttons make a neat, modern back. It goes with almost any festive silk saree.
Tailor note: Centre back opening with gold piping, 7 potli buttons with loops, back neck 7 inches.
Temple Design Blouse Back and Border Saree Blouse Design
Temple borders come from South Indian silks. The triangle gopuram shape looks best on a blouse when it follows the neckline.

The temple border curves around the neck so the gopurams point outwards. Pair with a Kanjivaram that has the same border.
Tailor note: Round back 8 inches, cut temple border on bias to curve smoothly, cotton lining.

A temple cut front uses stepped border panels on both sides of the V. It looks rich with a purple and gold silk saree.
Tailor note: V front 6 inches, stepped temple border panels on each side, hooks at front.

For a border saree, put the widest border on the sleeves and keep the neck plain. It balances the heavy saree border.
Tailor note: Three-quarter sleeves with 3 inch woven border, plain round neck with piping.
Blouse Sleeves Lace Design
If you want only a little lace, put it on the baju. Sleeve lace is easy to change later and does not affect the fit.

Lace bell sleeves feel soft and romantic. They go well with a light net or chiffon saree for day weddings.
Tailor note: Bell sleeves to elbow in lace net, no lining in sleeve, body fully lined.

Small tassels on a cap sleeve are fun for mehendi and haldi. Pick a matching or contrast saree with mirror work.
Tailor note: Cap sleeves, 2 inch tassel lace on hem, round neck 6 inches front.

A gold jhalar lace at the sleeve hem gives a party touch without heavy work. Lovely with black and gold or any plain saree.
Tailor note: Three-quarter sleeves, 1.5 inch gold jhalar lace at hem, keep body plain.
Which Border or Lace Suits Which Saree
| Saree | Best border or lace |
|---|---|
| Kanjivaram, pattu | Temple border, wide zari |
| Cotton, handloom | Crochet lace, triple piping, saree border patch |
| Net, organza | Scallop edge, pearl lace |
| Chiffon, georgette | Sequin lace, jhalar, ribbon lace |
| Bandhani, leheriya | Gota lace, tassel lace |
A simple rule: the heavier the saree border, the thinner the blouse border. Let one of them lead.
Tips for Stitching Lace and Zari Borders
- Buy extra: curved necks use more lace than you think. Buy about half a metre extra.
- Cut on the bias: stiff zari and temple borders sit flat on a round neck only when the tailor cuts them on the bias or mitres the corners.
- Soft lining: use cotton lining under zari so it does not scratch your skin.
- Wash with care: gota and zari lace can tarnish. Dry clean or hand wash in cold water.

Questions women ask
How wide should the zari border be on a blouse?
About 1 inch on the neck and 2 to 3 inches on the sleeves works for most women. Petite women should keep it thinner. A very wide border on the neck can make the shoulders look broad.
Is lace good for a blouse lace design back for daily wear?
Yes. Cotton crochet lace is soft, breathes well and survives washing. Avoid metal lace for daily wear as it can scratch.
What is a scallop design blouse?
It is a blouse where the neck, sleeve or hem ends in small curved scallops. They can be embroidered, cut out or made from scallop lace. It looks best on organza, net and cotton silk.
Which border saree blouse design looks best with a heavy border saree?
Keep the blouse border thinner than the saree border, or use the saree border only on the sleeves. A plain neck with piping balances a broad saree border well.
Can I add piping to an old blouse?
Yes. A tailor can unpick the neck facing and add piping in a contrast colour. It costs little and freshens up an old blouse.
What is a temple design blouse?
It uses the triangle temple border from South Indian silks on the neck, sleeves or as stepped panels. See our Kanjivaram pattu blouse design page for matching ideas.
